After learning that he was on the World Cup roster, Chris Wondolowski's first call was to his wife, Lindsay.
"Shut up!" she replied.
"She didn't believe me for a bit,'' Wondolowski said Friday. "But after a while, she did.''
The Earthquakes star and Danville resident is headed to the world's biggest sporting event, once again beating the odds to carve a spot on the 23-man roster bound for Brazil.
"I'm very excited,'' he said. "There aren't enough words to describe it ... I always had the dream.''
Wondolowski was one of the surprising inclusions on a roster notable for who didn't make the cut: Landon Donovan, the greatest player in American history.
"We all have an incredible amount of respect and admiration for everything Landon has done for the team and soccer in this country,'' midfielder Michael Bradley said.
"To see him walk out the door yesterday wasn't easy. But there are 23 guys ready to go to the World Cup and make this something special.''
