April 12 1996: Four people, including a father and his 14-year-old daughter, die when their motor boat hits a sand bar in heavy waves and capsizes in Tomales Bay. None of the victims is wearing a life jacket.

March 17 2001: A husband and wife married for 22 years are electrocuted when the mast of their sail boat hits a high power line that crosses the Stockton Deep Water Channel in San Joaquin County. Investigators blamed the accident on their inexperience in operating the sail boat.

Aug. 12 2001: A man swimming in Lake Shasta's Dry Fork Inlet dies when a motor boat with a 500 horsepower engine going more than 20 mph boat runs over him in the water. Investigators blamed the accident on the driver of the boat not paying attention.

Aug. 31, 2003: A 16-year-old San Lorenzo girl dies on Lake Berryessa while being towed behind a boat on a small platform called a "wake board." The boat's 17-year old driver lost track of where the victim was in the water and ran over her. The victim was hit by the boat's propeller.

July 20, 2004: A 6-year-old Hayward boy and his teenage cousin are killed in a collision between two personal watercraft on Lake Tahoe. Another teenager panicked and jumped from the watercraft he was riding rather than trying to avoid the one carrying the two cousins.
