There's a lack of buyers for AOL, Richard Greenfield, an analyst at Pali Research, said Monday in a note. Still, Comcast Chief Executive Officer Brian Roberts may be interested in AOL to get its advertising network and Web site, he wrote. Roberts is unlikely to pay more than $10 billion, according to Greenfield. In 2000, AOL purchased Time Warner for $164 billion.
The other shoe has dropped with the pending move of California State Automobile Association to the East Bay from San Francisco. AAA sold its headquarters building in downtown San Francisco this month for $120 million. The buyer was a partnership of the California Public Employees Retirement System, The Patson Cos. and Vornado Realty Trust. The deal was arranged through the Grubb & Ellis commercial realty firm. This paper reported in June that AAA had completed a deal to move 1,000 employees and its headquarters to a Walnut Creek site near the Pleasant Hil l BART station.
Mattson Technology Inc. reported stronger profits but weaker revenue for its fourth quarter that ended Dec. 31. Fremont-based Mattson, a semiconductor equipment maker, earned $4.8 million, or 9 cents a share, on sales of $52.3 million. Profits jumped 30 percent and sales fell 37 percent.
For all of 2007, Mattson earned $27.6 million, up 61 percent from 2006. Full-year sales totaled $267.3 million, down 5 percent.
