Dead shoplifter identified
The 400-plus-pound man who police say died after a struggle with Stoneridge Mall security officers Thursday night was identified Saturday as Alex Gomes II, 32, of Fresno.
An autopsy was performed but the cause of death remained unknown pending an investigation, a an Alameda County coroner's official said.
Gomes allegedly took a hat from the men's department at Macy's when mall and department store security confronted him about 8:35 p.m. Security officers told police that he resisted their attempt to detain him, then collapsed.
A Livermore-Pleasanton fire crew performed CPR on Gomes, but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at ValleyCare Medical Center. Police said the security officers did not use any weapons or taser.
