MARTINEZ -- A 22-year-old Clayton man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murdering his father in their family home earlier this month.

Matthew Wester is also charged with felony assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury for an alleged March 4 attack on 61-year-old Richard Wester. The father died of a traumatic chest injury March 8.

Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the assault. Richard Wester told a court that his son was violent with him when he obtained a restraining order against Matthew Wester in 2010. The restraining order lapsed in June 2011.

Matthew Wester remains in County Jail in lieu of $1.08 million bail. He returns to court with his public defender April 16 to schedule his preliminary hearing.
