A Clayton man was found dead in Bakersfield after being released from jail there, an incident police are calling a homicide.

Christopher Wagstaff, 43, was found lying on the ground in front of the Kern County Superior Courthouse, located near the local jail, around 7 a.m. Sunday, Bakersfield police Sgt. Joe Grubbs said.

Grubbs would not say how Wagstaff was killed, but said it was clear that it was not an accident. Wagstaff was found the day after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment in the Lake Isabella area, located about 45 minutes outside of Bakersfield.
