Christmas may still be a month away, but the Saint Mary's College men's basketball team was already in the spirit of giving on Monday night.

And Omar Samhan, Wayne Hunter and Matthew Dellavedova were happy to receive.

The three players combined for 73 points as the Gaels served up 23 assists as a team and rolled to a 92-67 victory over Cal Poly at McKeon Pavilion.

"It's just one of those things where our offense finally started clicking," said Samhan, the senior center who set a career-high with 33 points. "Clicking on offense leads to clicking on defense. It all finally came together and it just felt smooth, scoring just every time down. It felt good."

The Gaels (3-1) opened the game shooting at a torrid pace. They made 12 of their first 15 field goal attempts, which included going 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

Junior point guard Mickey McConnell, who came into the game averaging 16 points per game, took only one shot in the first half. Instead, he just kept feeding the hot hands. By halftime he'd tied his career-high in assists with seven and finished the game with 12.

"(Cal Poly) was playing him well, and so he took what he should take," Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett said of McConnell. "It wasn't his night to score. That's when you're good. He made the right plays and he did a great job of finding the guys who were open."

The Gaels never trailed, and the score was tied just once at 2-2. Saint Mary's built

a lead as large as 14 points in the first half, but Cal Poly managed to go into the break trailing by just eight after a David Hanson's 3-pointer at the buzzer made it 45-37.

The Mustangs (0-4) would get as close as 47-41 early in the second half before the Gaels blew the game open with a 24-7 run that pushed the score to 71-48 with 9:45 to go.

Saint Mary's kept its foot on the gas and built its lead as to 31 points as Samhan (San Ramon Valley High) scored 15 points over a six-minute span that ended with him leaving the game with 4:16 remaining and the Gaels up 88-57.

"It's attrition," Bennett said. "You can guard (Omar) for a while, but he's gonna keep coming, and we're going to keep putting it in there."

Hunter finished with 21 points, going 8-for-13 from the field and breaking a 1-for-17 slump over his last two games.

Dellavedova had 19 points and went 5-for-6 from behind the arc.

Cal Poly was led by San Rafael native Jordan Lewis, who scored a career-high 14 points. Bishop O'Dowd's Shawn Lewis added seven points and Salesian product Justin Brown had five.
