Cal's 2010 recruiting class is picking up steam with National Letter of Intent Day looming Wednesday.

A source said Monday that defensive end Gabe King of Eugene, Ore., will sign with Cal on Wednesday. King, rated as the 30th overall prospect in the country by rivals.com, will announce the decision at a news conference along with a handful of other top national recruits in North Carolina on Wednesday.

That news conference also will include Keenan Allen of Greensboro, N.C., regarded as the top safety in the country by scout.com. Allen took an official visit to Cal last weekend and is believed to be deciding among the Bears, Clemson and Alabama. Allen originally committed to Alabama but decided to explore other options.

It is believed Allen and his half brother, Zach Maynard, want to attend school together. Maynard, who was also in Berkeley over the weekend, is a quarterback transferring out of Buffalo after the departure of coach Turner Gill to Kansas.

Cal has 16 commitments in its 2010 class, which is rated 22nd nationally by ESPN.com. Rivals.com ranks the Bears at No. 23 and scout.com at No. 38.

Cal also is believed to still be in the running for defensive tackle J.R. Ferguson of Chatham, Va., rated as the 31st overall prospect by rivals.com and 78th by scout.com. Ferguson reportedly is deciding among Cal, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, LSU and Texas Tech.
