SAN JOSE -- San Jose State defense end Travis Johnson was named the Western Athletic Conference's preseason defensive player of the year Thursday by the league's media.
Johnson, a senior from The King's Academy in Sunnyvale, had 9.5 sacks last season and earned first-team all-league honors.
His 19 career sacks rank as the third-highest total in the nation among active players, according to the WAC.
The kinesiology major is one of 84 players on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player.
Louisiana Tech receiver Quinton Patton was named the WAC's preseason offensive player of the year after scoring 11 touchdowns last season.
The conference does not select a preseason all-league team.
