Redshirt freshman Ricky Lloyd completed just 2 of 8 passes for 25 yards, but still Southern Miss still had a chance to upset No. 19 Louisville before falling 21-17 on a rain-soaked Saturday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Lloyd -- the Golden Eagles' third-string quarterback from Concord High -- made his first college start because of injuries to starter Chris Campbell and backup Anthony Alford.
"Let's face it -- the rain and water conditions hampered everybody's throwing game," Southern Miss coach Ellis Johnson said.
The Cardinals (5-0) trailed 17-6 midway through the second quarter but scored 15 unanswered points for the win.
Southern Miss (0-4) had a chance to win on the final drive, but a halfback pass by Desmond Johnson fell incomplete on fourth down.
Synchro swimming
Stanford's Mariya Koroleva and duet partner Mary Killman were named USA Synchronized Swimming's athletes of the year, while Santa Clara native Kim Wurzel-LoPorto was coach of the year.
Koroleva and Killman were 11th in their Olympic debut in London. Koroleva, of Concord, had competed for the Walnut Creek Aquanuts, whereas Killman competed for the Santa Clara Aquamaids.
Wurzel-LoPorto led Incarnate Word of San Antonio to the high point title at the 2012 national championships. Walnut Creek's Kim Probst won the developmental coaching award.
Golf
Stan Kinsey shot a 5-under 66 to take the lead in stroke-play qualifying for the USGA Senior Amateur in West Caldwell, N.J. The top 64 after Sunday's round advance to match play. Pleasant Hill's Gary Vanier was tied for ninth at 70.
