Ariana Martinez scored in the 87th minute, giving Cal a 1-0 women's soccer win over Pepperdine in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday in Malibu.
The Bears (16-5) will play San Diego State (20-1-1) in the second round. The Aztecs routed Cal State Northridge 3-0 on Saturday night.
With overtime looming, Lauren Battung crossed the ball into the box, and Martinez, on the near post, whiffed on her initial shot. A defender tried to clear the ball, but Martinez beat her to it and fired past goalkeeper Roxanne Barker for her second goal of the year.
"I hit it in as hard as I could and made sure it went in," the midfielder said.
Cal keeper Emily Kruger made just one save against the Waves (14-7) on a blast by Lynn Williams in the 29th minute.
