Stanford All-America pitcher Mark Appel was named one of 10 NCAA Division I baseball players selected as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
The award is given to student-athletes who excel on and off the field. The winner will be announced during the College World Series (June 15-26) in Omaha, Neb.
After being chosen eighth overall in the 2012 baseball draft by Pittsburgh, Appel (Monte Vista High) opted to return for his senior season at Stanford and last month earned his bachelor's degree. The No. 15 Stanford softball team (29-16) dropped a 9-6 decision at Pacific (28-22). The Cardinal's Leah White and Erin Ashby each hit a three-run homer. In the bottom of the sixth, UOP's Megan Foglesong hit a go-ahead RBI double. Stanford tied for fourth at the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships, and Cal finished 10th at Valencia Country Club. The Cardinal had a three-round total of 18-over 882, and the Bears were at 61-over 925. Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse shot a 1-over 73 and tied for third at 3-under 213. Cal's Nicola Rössler (75) was 24th at 8-over 224. USC won the team title at 11-under 853 and had the top two individuals finishers led by Annie Park's 7-under 209. Saint Mary's Dalas Dodd and Jordan Shaw were among the 10 teams selected to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships, which begin May 3 in Gulf Shores, Ala. Amanda Glass (San Ramon Valley High) will join the Saint Mary's women's soccer team for the 2013 season. She was a starting defender as a junior last year at Cal. The Cal rugby team will host Navy in one semifinal of the Varsity Cup National Championships on Saturday at 2 p.m. BYU hosts Central Washington in the other semifinal. Saint Mary's hosts Colorado in the quarterfinals of the USA Rugby D1A national championships Saturday at 1 p.m.
