Freshman Jessie Hufstetler hit a three-run home run in the first inning, sparking top-seeded San Jose State to a 3-1 victory over second-seeded New Mexico State in the WAC softball tournament Friday in Ruston, La.

The win advanced the Spartans (41-15) to Saturday's championship against New Mexico State. It will be San Jose State's first appearance in the WAC championship game. New Mexico State (37-19) beat Texas State 3-1 later Friday to earn a rematch with the Spartans.

New Mexico State would have to beat SJSU twice to win the title, while the Spartans need only one victory.

In Friday's game, WAC Pitcher of the Year Amanda Pridmore (28-9) allowed just seven hits in earning the win for SJSU.

  • The Stanford men's tennis team was eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, losing 4-2 to LSU in Malibu.

    Chris Simpson provided the clincher for LSU with a 7-5, 6-1 win over John Morrissey in a matchup of top-50 players. It was Stanford's 35th appearance in the NCAA tournament.

    Campbell Johnson's court-three singles win clinched Cal's 4-1 win over Florida State in Gainesville, Fla. Cal will play Denver on Saturday.

  • Host Stanford cruised past Miami (Ohio) 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA women's tennis tournament. Nicole Gibbs won easily at No. 1 singles, beating Nimisha Mohan 6-1, 6-0. The Cardinal plays Rice on Saturday at 1 p.m.

    Anett Schutting beat Nina Lagvilava 6-2, 6-4 on court one to clinch a 4-0 win for host Cal over Stony Brook. Cal plays Auburn at noon Saturday.

  • The Stanford women's golf team was fifth at 585 after two rounds of the NCAA West Regional at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course. San Jose State (605) was 15th, and Cal (609) 17th in the field of 24. Purdue led heading into Saturday's final round at 577. San Jose State's Regan DeGuzman (72-141) was fourth among individuals. USC's Annie Park was No. 1 at 4-under 138.

  • The Stanford women's water polo team reached the National Collegiate Championship semifinal with a 20-3 rout of Iona in Boston. The Cardinal will play UCLA on Saturday.

  • Stanford won 8-7 over Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament. The Cardinal will play host Northwestern on Sunday.

  • Devon Rodriguez's two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth inning, and the Cal baseball team defeated No. 13 Arizona State 3-1 at Evans Diamond.

  • De Anza College defeated San Diego City College 12-9 to win the state championship in community college women's badminton.

    San Jose Giants

    Chris Lofton's RBI single broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, and the San Jose Giants defeated the High Desert Mavericks 5-3 in a California League game at Municipal Stadium.

    Luis Rojas got the win with two innings of hitless relief. Hunter Strickland struck out two in a hitless ninth to earn the save.

    The Giants' Ryan Cavan extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
