SAN JOSE STATE VS. NAVY
RECORDS: San Jose State 5-5, Navy 6-4
KICKOFF: 6:30 p.m., Spartan Stadium
RADIO: 1590, 90.5
SERIES HISTORY: SJSU leads 2-0. The Spartans won 12-0 last year in Annapolis, Md., and 27-24 in 2011 in San Jose.
STORYLINE: Time is running short for SJSU to gain bowl eligibility after losing the past two games. The regular-season finale is next week vs. No. 15 Fresno State, and the Spartans will be decided underdogs in that game, so this is the best shot for SJSU to become bowl eligible. Navy has accepted a bid to the Armed Forces Bowl, where it will face a team from the Mountain West Conference.
INJURY UPDATE: San Jose State -- WR Noel Grigsby (knee), RB Tyler Ervin (ankle), DT Tony Popovich (shoulder), LB Vince Buhagiar (shoulder), LB Derek Muaava (knee), LB Ryan Goforth (shoulder), TE Andrew Vollert (shoulder), OL David Catalano (foot) and TE Max Miller (undisclosed) are out. OL Ryan Jones (foot) is questionable. Navy -- SB Colin Osborne (knee), NG Bernard Sarra (ankle), OT Graham Vickers (head), QB John Hendrick (knee) are out. S Chris Ferguson (head) is doubtful. C Tanner Fleming (head), CB Kwazel Bertrand (neck), FB Noah Copeland (leg) and FB Chris Swain (hamstring) are questionable.
MATCHUP TO WATCH: Navy's running game vs. San Jose State's defense. The Midshipmen are fifth in the nation at 311.0 yards rushing per game and have been in the top 10 nationally every year since 2002. The Spartans are surrendering 201.6 per game on the ground -- tied for 99th in the nation -- and allowed 311 to Nevada last week. If there's no improvement, SJSU could be in big trouble.
STATS THAT MATTER: Navy has been held under 100 yards rushing once during coach Ken Niumatalolo's tenure, and that was against SJSU last year when the Spartans allowed 70. The 144 yards of total offense also is Navy's lowest output in Niumatalolo's tenure. ... SJSU QB David Fales needs 154 yards to surpass Adam Tafralis for the Spartans' all-time career passing yards mark. He's two touchdown passes from breaking Steve Clarkson's record.
