You may not know of her, but comedy nerds are convinced that Chelsea Peretti is on the brink of stardom.

The Oakland native has made Variety magazine's "Ten Comics to Watch" list, and Cosmopolitan recently declared, "Memorize her face, ya'llz, because she's about to be big-time."

After spending the past few years mostly doing stand-up and a popular call-in podcast, and writing for TV shows such as "Parks and Recreation," and "The Sarah Silverman Program," Peretti, 35, steps in front of the camera on Fox's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," one of the fall's most buzzed-about new comedies.

"It's hard to bury your head in Los Angeles," says Peretti, referring to the attention the show has generated. "People come up to you and say, 'Hey, I saw your picture on a bus.' It's tricky: You're excited by the possibilities, but you don't want to get too crazy."

Peretti, who attended fifth and sixth grade with series star Andy Samberg, plays Gina Linetti, an outspoken administrative assistant in a police precinct teeming with oddballs.

"She's unafraid to say what's on her mind and she's kind of in her own little world," Peretti says of Gina. "Often in an office situation, people suppress their feelings. But she gets to be a little absurd, and it's fun to let the air out of the room."

Peretti says the show's cast is meshing as if "Brooklyn" had already been on the air for months. That includes Andre Braugher, an acclaimed dramatic actor making his sitcom debut.

"Everyone talks about how Andre is so serious and intimidating, but he's a sweetheart," she says, before slipping into a deep voice to recall how Braugher approached her recently to say, "I've been reading your Twitter."

"I'm honored, but that strikes me as funny," she says. "The last thing I would think Andre Braugher would do when he goes home at night is check out my tweets."
