Minutemen keep rolling

  • After falling behind 6-0 early, the Concord High football team rallied for 50 straight points to beat Bethel-Vallejo 50-13 on Sept. 14. The Minutemen tallied 544 yards with a balanced offense as they improved their record to 4-0. Olito Thompson rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Wyatt Morrow threw for 266 yards and two scores.

    Red Devils improve to 2-1

  • The Mt. Diablo High football team beat Berean Christian 20-9 on Sept. 15 to notch its second straight win. Austin Hunt completed 9 of 18 passes for 156 yards and three touchowns for the Red Devils, who already have more wins this season than the last two years combined. Ethan Anderson paced Berean Christian with 69 rushing yards.

    Bulldogs come up short

  • The Alhambra High football team played a North Bay opponent for the third consecutive week and the result was another loss. The Bulldogs fell 21-14 to Maria Carrillo-Santa Rosa. Ethan Little caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Leo Costa and Taylor Poyadue found the end zone on a 2-yard run to account for the Bulldogs' two scores.

    Mats win tournament title

  • The Miramonte High girls water polo team won the Sierra Shootout with a 10-2 victory over Clovis North in the championship game Sept. 15. The Matadors beat Del Oro-Loomis 6-2 in the semifinals. Goalkeeper Kathryn Lloyd and the defense allowed just 13 goals over five games in the tournament.

  • Chabot at Diablo Valley, football, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- The Vikings are looking for their first win of the season against a Chabot team that is also winless.

  • Acalanes at Campolindo, football, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- The undefeated Dons will take on the defending DFAL champions in both teams' league openers. Campo lost for the first time last week 16-14 to El Cerrito.

  • Alhambra at Las Lomas, football, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- After 1-3 nonleague campaigns, both squads are badly in need of a win as the league season opens.

    Stars of the week

  • MacKenzie Draper, Concord volleyball -- In a five-game win over Livermore on Sept. 14, Draper contributed 26 assists, 10 digs, 7 aces and 4 kills.

  • Joe Protheroe, Clayton Valley football -- The senior running back collected 306 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the Eagles' 68-21 rout of Vintage-Napa on Sept. 14.

  • Matt DeSilva and Timmy Jackson, College Park football -- DeSilva rushed for touchdowns of 1 and 6 yards in the Falcons' 14-7 win over Pinole Valley on Sept. 14 while Jackson had a team-high 161 rushing yards.

  • Kristen Hong, Miramonte girls water polo -- Hong scored four goals to lead the Matadors offensively in their 10-2 win over Clovis North in the championship game of the Sierra Shootout on Sept. 15.

  • Deshawn Johnson, Acalanes football -- The senior running back rushed for 204 yards on 21 carries and scored the only touchdown of the Dons' 7-0 victory over Tennyson on Sept. 14.

  • Rachel Nieto, Las Lomas girls volleyball -- The senior outside hitter was everywhere in a 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 victory over Clayton Valley on Sept. 11. She recoreded 13 kills, 20 digs and 12 service points.
