Cougars set record The Carondelet High golf team broke a 13-year old record when it beat Monte Vista 192-215 at Diablo Country Club on Sept. 27. The score of 192 was the team's lowest over that stretch. Lauren Ipsen and Sabrina Virtusio each shot a 2-over 36 to tie for medalist honors. Kelly Ransom shot a 38, Blake Haverty added a 39 and Katherine Adams posted a 43 to round out the Cougars lineup. Entering play this week, Carondelet was 8-1 in EBAL play.

Falcons on a roll The College Park High girls volleyball team enjoyed an extremely productive week, winning five matches that included two DVAL victories and a three-match sweep at the Concord Invitational on Sept. 29. One of the more important wins of the week came Sept. 27 against visting Berean Christian, as the Falcons won 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18. Annelise Tappe led College Park offensively, recording 20 kills in the victory. Entering play this week, College Park was 12-3 overall and 4-0 in DVAL play.

Eagles earn exciting win The Berean Christian High football team earned another dramatic victory when Ethan Anderson scored on a 1-yard run with 31 seconds left against St. Mary's on Sept. 29. The touchdown gave the Eagles a 25-21 win in Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division play. Berean Christian quarterback Garrett Anderson threw for 128 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for an 8-yard TD.

On deck Foothill at De La Salle, football, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans have had no trouble with their last two opponents, and now they'll host an improved Falcons squad led by sophomore quarterback Kyle Kearns. Dougherty Valley at Alhambra, football, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. -- The Bulldogs enter as favorites as they'll try to pick up their first DFAL win of the season against a reeling group of Wildcats. Dublin at Las Lomas, football, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. -- The Knights, coming off a crushing 21-17 loss to Acalanes, will have to contend with RB Ondre Rudolph and the Gaels to stay in the DFAL title picture.
Stars of the week Blair Hurlock, De La Salle cross country -- Hurlock posted the fastest time of any East Bay runner at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 29. He stopped the clock in 15 minutes, 23 seconds, placing fifth in the seeded race. Joe Protheroe, Clayton Valley football -- Protheroe continues to rack up huge numbers, rushing for 262 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-15 win over visiting Hayward on Sept. 28. He scored on runs of 4, 8, 84 and 41 yards. Morgan Davenport, Las Lomas girls water polo -- Davenport had six goals and an assist to power the Knights past Alhambra 14-13 in DFAL action on Sept. 26. She also scored 16 goals in four games at the Woodcreek Invitational Sept. 28-29. Vince Ferrante, Diablo Valley College football -- Ferrante rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries as the Vikings beat host Merced 41-17 on Sept. 29. Tyler Hanson, Miramonte boys cross country -- The senior won the boys Division III race at the prestigious Stanford Invitational on Sept. 29. Hanson completed the 3.1-mile course in 15:44 to win by three seconds. Alex O'Laughlin and Scott Whittington, Northgate boys water polo -- The senior co-captains combined for six goals to lead the Broncos to a 9-8 overtime victory over Clayton Valley Charter on Sept. 26. Annie Shurtz, Campolindo girls volleyball -- Schurtz tallied 20 kills to lead the Cougars to a key DFAL win against Las Lomas on Sept. 27.
