Spartans win EBAL title

  • The De La Salle High water polo team completed an unbeaten East Bay Athletic League season with a 21-6 win over California on Oct. 25. Tucker Angelo led the Spartans with seven goals. The strong league season helped De La Salle earn the No. 2 seed in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs. The Spartans open with a first-round game against No. 15 Mission San Jose at home at 8 p.m. on Nov. 1.

    Vikings can't hold late lead

  • The Diablo Valley College football team couldn't hold on against Siskiyous in its Mid-Empire League opener and suffered a 34-27 loss. The Vikings went ahead 27-26 when Quinn Kaehler hit Cameron Rowland for a 2-yard score with 9:30 to play but Siskiyous responded with a 54-yard pass play for a TD a minute later. Kaehler threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns and Rowland caught eight passes for 95 yards.

    Mt. Diablo announces Hall of Fame inductees

  • Mt. Diablo High announced five new inductees to its Sports Hall of Fame. This year's inductees are the 1950-51 boys basketball team, Rodney Atnip (1957), Louie Audas (1961), Steve Freeborn (1967) and Jerry Reese (1991). The induction dinner is Nov. 9 at Zio Fraedo's in Pleasant Hill. For tickets, call Lou Adamo at 925-372-0802 or 925-212-9332. Proceeds go to help fund sports programs at Mt. Diablo High.

    Broncos rock DVAL field

  • The Northgate High girls tennis team dominated the Diablo Valley Athletic League championship Oct. 24-26. The Broncos, who went undefeated as a team in league play, also swept the singles and double competition. Freshman Ana Boeriu won the singles title over teammate Kristina Lencesova while Lindsey Welch and Shannon Markiewicz earned the doubles crown over teammates Katie Shimizu and Julia Chernyavsky.

  • DVAL championships, cross country, Nov. 2, 1 p.m. -- The postseason kicks off at Martinez's Hidden Valley Park where the league's top runners will duel for team and individual titles. Northgate's Danny Stalters is one to watch on the boys side.

  • De La Salle at California, football, Nov. 2, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans will try to spoil the Grizzlies' senior night and complete an unbeaten regular season in this nonleague game. Cal has already clinched at least a share of the EBAL title.

  • Sacramento City at Diablo Valley, football, Nov. 2, 7 p.m. -- The Vikings will try to even their Mid-Empire Conference record when they host the 5-3 Panthers.

    Stars of the week

  • Mikey Protheroe, Clayton Valley football -- The Eagles' quarterback scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter of a 41-21 win over Northgate on Oct. 26 to clinch a share of the DVAL title. Protheroe finished with three rushing TDs and was also 3 of 4 for 86 yards through the air.

  • Ana Boeriu, Northgate girls tennis -- The freshman won the DVAL singles championship by beating teammate Kristina Lencesova 6-1, 6-0 in the final on Oct. 26.

  • Drew Holland, Miramonte boys water polo -- The senior co-captain has been rock solid in front of the cage all year and turned it up a notch during the final week of the regular season. He had 10 saves in Miramonte's 13-5 win over Camplindo to clinch the DFAL title, then led the Matadors to a third-place finish at the Memorial Cup tournament.

  • Dimitri Salido, College Park football -- The junior quarterback rushed for 191 yards and five touchdowns in the Falcons' 61-14 win over Ygnacio Valley on Oct. 26.

  • Maddie Tagg, Campolindo girls water polo -- The sophomore goalie produced 17 saves to help the Cougars beat Miramonte 14-4 to win the DFAL championship with a 5-0 league record.

  • Lani Tittle, Northgate girls water polo -- Tittle scored 10 goals in two games to help the Broncos win the DVAL tournament Oct. 26. The Broncos beat Clayton Valley 9-4 in the championship.
