Uaisele Manoa returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown to break a 6-6 tie and lead the visiting Concord High football team to a 14-6 win over Casa Grande on a rainy Saturday night in Petaluma.
With the victory, the Minutemen advance to the North Coast Section Division II semifinals on Friday against Diablo Valley Athletic League rival Clayton Valley at 7 p.m.
The game was delayed nearly 30 minutes in the first half when the lights at the stadium went out.
Casa Grande quarterback JaJuan Lawson was facing a third-and-8 at the Gauchos' 38 when he threw the ball right to Manoa, who zipped to the left sideline for the go-ahead touchdown.
"Before the play, I thought it was going to be a screen," Manoa said. "So I hung out for a little bit. Before I knew it, I had the ball in my hands. I just sprinted to the end zone."
It was an old-fashioned game of mudball, as the teams slogged it out on a natural grass field. Several players changed jerseys through the course of the game. Those who didn't finished with a dun-color that obscured their numbers.
Casa Grande went up 6-0 in the first quarter on a 15-yard run by John Porchivina. Concord tied the score in the second quarter on a 30-yard pass from Mitchell Daniels to Jay Yesin.
It was as the Minutemen (10-2) were preparing to kickoff that the lights went out. Because of the rain, officials had to wait to turn the circuit back on until they were sure it was dry.
