Destani Derrico, 12, of Concord, plays the role of elf alongside two live reindeer and Santa Claus on the living roof at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Destani, a student at Concord Christian School, was the winner of the Academy's 2011 Name the Reindeer contest with "Aurora." On attempting to feed the two-antlered animal some crackers, she admitted, "I was scared." This year's naming contest for the reindeer closes Dec. 2 (visit www.calacademy.org). The academy in Golden Gate Park also has a Reindeer Rendevous program at noon daily where visitors can get up close with live caribou and discover why the animals are known as the Nomads of the North, migrating up to 3,000 miles per year, and what makes them an important part of the northern ecosystems.
