Ayala, Warriors win again

  • The Ygnacio Valley High boys soccer team remained perfect in Diablo Valley Athletic League play with a 4-1 victory over College Park on Jan. 3. Jonathan Ayala scored two goals in the win to continue his excellent season. The junior forward has 15 goals on the year as the Warriors have put together a 9-1-2 record as of Jan. 7.

    Knights topple Eagles

  • Led by Matt Nerland and Ben Wood, the Las Lomas High boys basketball team produced a 57-50 nonleague win over Clayton Valley Charter on Jan. 5. Nerland scored 21 points while Wood added 20 to account for a majority of the Knights' scoring. The win gave the Knights a 7-5 overall record as they entered Diablo Foothill Athletic League play.

    Falcons roll to DVAL wins

  • The College Park High boys basketball team is looking like one of the top teams in the Diablo Valley Athletic League. The Falcons won big in their first two league games, defeating Northgate 55-30 on Jan. 2 and Ygnacio Valley 64-24 on Jan. 4. Sophomore Joe DeMers scored 19 points against the Broncos while Mikey Eggleton (13 points) was the leading scorer against the Warriors.

    Bentley improves to 14-0

  • The Bentley High boys basketball team pushed its record to 14-0 with a 66-49 nonleague victory over Leadership-San Francisco on Jan. 5. Nate Ellis was once again the leading scorer for the Phoenix with 18 points. Bentely also got an excellent performance from junior Ian Kirby, who scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

  • Alhambra at Las Lomas, girls soccer, Jan. 11, 6:15 p.m. -- Alhambra will try to continue its surge up the DFAL standings when it faces a solid Las Lomas squad.

  • College Park at Clayton Valley, girls soccer, Jan. 10, 6 p.m. -- The Falcons and Eagles, typically two of the league's top teams, get together for a key DVAL match.

  • Miramonte at Campolindo, basketball, Jan. 11, girls at 5:30 p.m., boys at 7 p.m. -- The Cougars' gym will be loud for these spirited rivalry games.

  • Ygnacio Valley at Acalanes, boys soccer, Jan. 12, 6 p.m. -- Two of the top teams in the East Bay square off in a big nonleague match. Acalanes handed the Warriors their only loss of the season in December.

  • Ashley Allen, Clayton Valley Charter girls basketball -- The senior guard scored 25 points to spark the Eagles to a 68-37 win over Berean Christian on Jan. 4.

  • Tylek Farley, Concord boys basketball -- Farley's 22 points and 19 rebounds keyed a 68-48 victory over Mt. Diablo on Jan. 4.

  • Joe DeMers, College Park boys basketball -- The sophomore had team highs of 19 points and six rebounds to propel the Falcons to a 55-30 win over Northgate on Jan. 2.

  • Kyla Miller, College Park girls basketball -- The sophomore had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) to help the Falcons defeat Northgate 44-37 in their Jan. 2 DVAL opener.

  • Matt Nerland, Las Lomas boys basketball -- Nerland led the Knights to a 57-50 nonleague win over Clayton Valley Charter on Jan. 5 with 21 points.

  • Matt O'Reilly, Campolindo boys basketball -- The sophomore guard connected on six of nine 3-point attemps and scored 20 points to lead the Cougars past Foothill-Sacramento 75-59 on Jan. 5.

  • Madi West, Berean Christian girls basketball -- West scored 22 points as the Eagles edged Concord 55-51 in DVAL action on Jan. 2.
