Romeo leads Cougars

  • A 15-point fourth quarter by junior Natalie Romeo sparked the Carondelet High basketball team to a 66-58 win over Berkeley at the Campolindo Shootout on Jan. 26. Romeo scored 29 points total for the Cougars, including four 3-pointers, and was 9 of 9 from the free throw line. The Cougars improved to 16-3 overall with the big nonleague victory.

    'Dogs net DFAL win

  • The Alhambra High girls basketball team earned its first Diablo Foothill Athletic League win of the year by beating Las Lomas 53-49 on Jan. 22. Shelby Clemons led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Helene Hollidge added 13. The Bulldogs nearly earned another league win later in the week, but ended up falling to Acalanes 41-39.

    Eagles announce coaching changes

  • Berean Christian High made two noteworthy coaching changes recently. Former NFL running back James Hodgins will take over as head football coach for Mark Barcelon. Longtime volleyball coach Jim Simonson also announced his retirement. Simonson, who will be replaced by Eddie Chang, retires with 604 career wins in stints at Berean Christian and Campolindo.

    Locals earn All-America honors

  • Miramonte High seniors Charlie Wiser and Jack Fellner were both selected to the California-Hawaii All-American water polo first-team, highlighing the list of local honorees. Others selected include Miramonte's Drew Holland (second team), Campolindo's JD Ratchford (fourth team), De La Salle's Tucker Angelo (fifth team), Acalanes' Connor Reid (sixth team) and Las Lomas' Sam Toriggino (ninth team).

  • Alhambra at Campolindo, girls soccer, Feb. 1, 6:15 p.m. -- Two of the DFAL's top squads will square off in a game with league title implications.

  • De La Salle at Monte Vista, boys basketball, Feb. 1, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans will try to avenge a rare home loss suffered against the Mustangs three weeks ago in a game that will also help decide the EBAL champion.

  • Clayton Valley at Northgate, girls basketball, Feb. 1, 7 p.m. -- The Eagles have rarely been tested in DVAL play this year but still need to get past the defending league champion Broncos.

  • Natalie Romeo, Carondelet girls basketball -- Romeo scored 29 and 24 points in back-to-back wins for the Cougars Jan. 25-26. She scored 15 points in the final quarter of a 66-58 win over Berkeley.

  • Tylek Farley, Concord boys basketball -- Farley scored 18 points, helping the Minutemen edge Clayton Valley 56-55 in DVAL action on Jan. 21.

  • Rona Chavez and Madi West, Berean Christian girls basketball -- The Eagles duo combined to score 51 points in a 73-49 win over Concord on Jan. 25.

  • Ashley Ewing, Campolindo girls basketball -- She scored 24 points in the Cougars' 60-46 win over Castro Valley at the Campolindo Shootout on Jan. 26.

  • Jesus Maldonado, Alhambra boys soccer -- Maldonado scored the winning goal in the 48th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over Ygnacio Valley on Jan. 23.

  • Matt Nerland, Las Lomas boys basketball -- Nerland's 17 points helped the Knights earn a 91-63 victory over Alhambra on Jan. 22. He also had 23 points in a win over California on Jan. 21.

  • Shelby Salling, College Park girls basketball -- The senior forward scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead a 53-45 victory over Northgate on Jan. 24.

  • Buster Souza, Acalanes boys basketball -- In a 60-45 win over Alhambra on Jan. 25, the junior posted scored a game-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds and five blocks.
