Good start for Minutemen

  • The Concord High softball team won two games against College Park during the week of March 25 to kick off the Diablo Valley Athletic League season. The defending league champions, Concord got solid pitching from junior Kelly Drake. She didn't allow a run in 11.1 innings of work against the Falcons, and Aleyna Benipayo tallied five hits in the two games.

    Broncos 2-0 in league

  • The Northgate High baseball team opened Diablo Valley Athletic League play with two victories over Mt. Diablo during the week of March 25. The Broncos won 16-1 on March 26, but needed nine innings to post a 9-8 win two days later. Harrison Kuehn went 4 for 5 in the extra-inning victory.

    'Dogs on a run

  • The Alhambra High baseball team is on a roll, having won five of its past six games entering the week of April 1. The Bulldogs most recently defeated Linden in the first round of their own Easter Tournament on March 30. Finals for the 44th annual tournament are scheduled for April 4.

    Dons earn comeback win

  • The Acalanes High softball team rallied for a 5-4 nonleague victory over Tamalpais on March 29 to improve to 9-2 on the season. The Dons were down 4-1 in the fifth inning and 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh. Mia Monopoli then hit a solo home run as Acalanes scored twice in the final frame for the walk-off win. Jamie Jacobs also had a big day at the plate, going 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

  • Livermore Stampede, softball, April 4-6, all day -- Alhambra hopes to compete for the title against some of Northern California's top squads.

  • Berean Christian at Northgate, baseball, April 9, 4 p.m. -- The two Walnut Creek teams will get together twice this week for their season series.

  • Northgate at College Park, boys volleyball, April 9, 6 p.m. -- The top contenders in the DVAL will square off in Pleasant Hill.

    Stars of the week

  • Matt D'Angina, Clayton Valley boys volleyball -- D'Angina tallied 18 kills, 23 assists and eight blocks for the Eagles to lead the way in a 25-16 25-23 23-25 25-23 victory over Concord on March 28.

  • Ashley Daniels, Clayton Valley softball -- Daniels went 2 for 2 with a home run to lead the Eagles over Alameda 2-0 on March 30, avenging one of the team's two losses on the season.

  • Austin Lonestar, De La Salle baseball -- Lonestar's huge day at the plate helped the Spartans top Foothill 14-3 in EBAL play on March 27. The senior went 4 for 4 with five RBI, three runs, two stolen bases and two extra-base hits.

  • Anthony Baleto, College Park baseball -- Baleto pitched a complete game one-hitter in the Falcons' 12-0 win over Concord on March 26. He struck out 11 and walked none to improve his record to 2-0.

  • Octavia Bond, Northgate softball -- In a 14-4 win over Dougherty Valley on March 30, Bond went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI. In 10 games, she's hitting .654.

  • Matt Klein, Campolindo boys golf -- Klein fired a 2-under 34 at the Franklin Canyon Golf Course to lead the Cougars over Alhambra 189-206 on March 27.

  • Ryan Nakagawa, Northgate boys tennis -- The Broncos' No. 1 singles player remained unbeaten in DVAL play with victories against his Clayton Valley and Mt. Diablo opponents in straight sets last week. The senior captain has led Northgate to a 7-0 league record.

  • Colin Rutan, Las Lomas boys lacrosse -- Rutan had a hand in nearly every goal the Knights scored in an 11-5 victory over University-San Francisco on March 29. He finished with five goals and four assists.
