CONCORD -- The Mt. Diablo school board has narrowed its list of interim superintendent candidates to two and hopes to interview the pair in closed session May 15, Board President Cheryl Hansen said.

She declined to name the candidates after a closed session meeting Wednesday, saying she first needed to confirm their continued interest in the position. After the planned board interviews, Hansen said stakeholders including union and community representatives would be invited to have conversations with the candidates so they could have input into appointment, expected to be made May 20.

Although the board had also hoped to approve final separation agreements with ousted Superintendent Steven Lawrence and General Counsel Greg Rolen on Wednesday, Hansen said attorneys for the two are still in discussions with the district's outside legal counsel. Now, she said she is hoping the agreements can be approved May 15.

"It's been a day at a time kind of going back and forth trying to see, 'How are we going to get this resolved?'" Hansen said. "We think by then, we'll definitely have something. That's our goal."
