A call for volunteers brought some 170 people to the Boatwright Sports Complex on Saturday to plant 56 trees. Bob Baker from the city of Concord, above left, carries a potted sapling from a trailer to one of the pre-dug holes where volunteers were ready for planting. A group of young people, above right, work at the mulch pile, filling buckets with the bark that is used around the newly planted trees. Jeremy Amos, top photo, of Clayton, and his daughter Kate Amos, 13, do their part in the community planting, which is part of "Invest from the Ground Up," a project of the California Urban Forests Council. Project coordinator Chris Llata said Concord was awarded a grant to cover the cost of the trees, stakes and ties, but needed community help to get them in the ground.
