Spartans claim wrestling title

  • De La Salle High earned the East Bay Athletic League wrestling team title at the Feb. 22 league meet, led by individual champions Donovin Guerrero (108 pounds) and David Conte (128). Guerrero won his championship by technical fall while Conte was victorious by decision. The deep Spartans sent eight wrestlers to the EBAL finals and qualified 11 for the North Coast Section championships.

    Falcons advance in NCS

  • The College Park High girls soccer team earned heart-stopping wins in its first two North Coast Section Division I playoff games to advance to the semifinals. The Falcons needed overtime to beat American 1-0 in their Feb. 19 opener, then beat Alameda in a shootout in the quarterfinals. Brianna Vassar scored against American while Melissa Kastell and Jacquelyn Scharff netted key goals in the penalty kick round against Alameda.

    Knights reach NCS semis

  • Las Lomas High's girls soccer team didn't allow a goal in its first two North Coast Section games to advance to the Division II semifinals. The No. 4 seeded Knights beat St. Patrick-St. Vincent 3-0 in their opener, then took down Encinal 3-0 in the quarterfinals on Feb. 22. Junior Gabrielle Brown scored twice against Encinal. Five different Knights scored in the two games.

  • CIF championships, girls wrestling, Feb. 28-March 1, all day -- Girls wrestlers take center stage at the state championships in Visalia. Finals are at 6 p.m. on March 1.

  • NCS championships, boys wrestling, Feb. 28-March 1, all day -- Section champions and state qualifiers will be determined at Newark Memorial High. Finals begin at 7 p.m. on March 1.

  • NCS finals, soccer, March 1 -- The North Coast Section will crown its soccer champions at times and locations to be determined.

    Stars of the week

  • Grady Nelson, De La Salle soccer -- Nelson tallied a goal and an assist in the Spartans' 3-0 win over Newark Memorial in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Feb 22.

  • Natalie Romeo, Carondelet girls basketball -- Romeo became the No. 2 all-time scorer at Carondelet and surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career with a 23 point game in an 86-36 win over Livermore on Feb. 18.

  • Floyd Armenta and Evan Carter, Northgate wrestling -- Armenta (195 pounds) won his second DVAL title and Carter (138) claimed his first at the league championships on Feb. 22.

  • Joe DeMers, College Park boys basketball -- DeMers scored 26 points, hitting on 5 3-pointers, as the Falcons claimed the outright DVAL title with a 100-61 win over Mt. Diablo on Feb. 21.

  • Melissa Kastell, College Park girls soccer -- The Falcons' right back came up with big plays on offense and defense in a shootout win over Alameda in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Feb. 22. She scored the final goal of the penalty kick shootout.

  • AJ Morgan and Melissa Wilson, Campolindo girls soccer -- Morgan and Wilson each scored as the Cougars topped Northgate 2-1 in the NCS Division II quarterfinals on Feb. 21.

  • Buster Souza, Acalanes boys basketball -- Souza's 18 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks helped the Dons upset Miramonte 49-43 in the DFAL finale on Feb. 21.
