Falcons surging
The Freedom High football team rolled to its third win of the season, beating Castro Valley 55-27 on Sept. 21. Joe Mixon rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns in the victory to bring his season total to 682 yards after five games. Quarterback Dante Mayes also had a good night, finishing 10 of 16 for 167 yards and two scores. The Falcons open Bay Valley Athletic League play on Sept. 28 at home against Heritage.-- Stephanie Hammon
Mustangs fall short
The Los Medanos College football team lost a close game with host Monterey 33-26 on Sept. 22. The Mustangs led until early in the fourth quarter when Monterey took a 27-20 lead. Shawn Vasquez rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the defeat. Quarterback Mike Behr passed for 352 yards and two touchdowns.-- Stephanie Hammon
Wolverines win again
The Deer Valley High football team improved to 3-1 with a 26-14 victory over San Leandro on Sept. 21. Quarterback Nsimba Webster passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns and the Wolverines' defense forced eight turnovers. -- Stephanie Hammon

Vacaville at Deer Valley, football, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. -- The Wolverines will face a stern test when a Bulldogs team that won a section championship in 2011 comes to town. Liberty at Pittsburg, football, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. -- The Pirates were energized by last week's big win at Granite Bay while the Lions are looking to snap a two-game losing streak in this Bay Valley Athletic League opener.Stars of the week
Megan Conder, Heritage girls golf -- Conder carded an even-par 36 at Deer Ridge Country Club to earn medalist honors in a 246-249 win over Freedom on Sept. 18. Joe Mixon, Freedom football -- The junior running back rushed for 188 yards and four touchdowns to power the Falcons past Castro Valley 55-27 on Sept. 21. Shane Pooler, Deer Valley football -- Pooler collected 132 of the Wolverinews' 203 rushing yards in a 26-14 win over San Leandro on Sept. 21. He also scored on a 25-yard run. Chad Russick and Savannah Rose, Liberty water polo -- The duo powered their teams to wins over Deer Valley on Sept. 17. Russick scored 10 goals in the boys' 19-7 win while Rose scored five of the girls' six goals in a 6-3 win. Walker Thaning, Heritage water polo -- Thaning scored six goals as the Wolverines stayed unbeaten in BVAL play with a 22-6 win over Deer Valley on Sept. 19.
