Haunted House helps YVHS music students

The Ygnacio Valley High School Instrumental Music Boosters host their annual Haunted House from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the school, 755 Oak Grove Road, Concord.

Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.General admission is $5, children under 10 are $3.

Oktoberfest is set at St. Catherine's school

St. Catherine of Siena hosts its Oktoberfest and car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at 604 Mellus St., Martinez.

Activities include children's games, crafts, face painting, bingo, cake, wine, karaoke and children's performances. Dinner follows after the 4:30 p.m. Mass in the Parish Hall.

Admission is free. Tickets for food, beverages and games will be available at the festival.

College Park musicians' showcase scheduled

The College Park High School instrumental music program presents its annual musicians' showcase Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Hilton Concord, 1970 Diamond Blvd., Concord.

"Let's Go to the Movies!" will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. and includes dinner, live and silent auctions and features entertainment by all six of the College Park High school music ensembles.

Football fundraiser to benefit FPHE grants

Magoo's Grill of Pleasant Hill and the Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education have Football Fundraisers for Education from 5 to 9 p.m. Sundays and Mondays through Dec. 23.

Participants can visit Magoo's, 1250 Contra Costa Blvd. in Pleasant Hill, to watch the game, have appetizers and dinner, and Magoo's will donate 25 percent of food sales to the FPHE grant program.

On Oct. 29 and Nov. 19, 50 percent of food sales will benefit the foundation. Former San Francisco 49er Dan Colchico will be visiting Oct. 29.

Helen Diller Foundation calls for nominations

Nominations are open for the Helen Diller Family Foundation Teen Tikkun Olam Awards, identifying Jewish teens whose volunteer service projects demonstrate a determined commitment to make the world a better place.

Up to 10 teens will each receive an award of $36,000, to be used to further their philanthropic work or their education.

Families sought to host exchange students

Host families are needed for incoming foreign exchange high school students. Students are 15-18 years old, are English-speaking, have their own spending money and carry health insurance.

Families can consist of a single parent, a childless couple or a retired couple.

Host families are eligible to claim a monthly charitable contribution deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month they host a sponsored student.
