There will be an education town hall meeting for parents 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 10. Parents from the Walnut Creek School District are holding the event to help educate the public on propositions 30 and 38. Educate Our State President and Cofounder Crystal Brown will be on hand, as well as district Superintendent Patty Wool and Acalanes Union High School Superintendent John Nickerson. They will discuss how the loss of funding would directly affect the district's schools.

The authors of a "The Biggest Job We'll Ever Have" will be the speakers at the Seven Hills School Parent Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the school 975 N. San Carlos Drive in Walnut Creek.
Laura and Malcolm Gauld are founders of the parenting workshops that emerged from their book. Their philosophy centers on a parent being the child's primary teacher. They will share their 10 core beliefs for parents -- what they call "The 10 Priorities" -- and talk about how families can raise successful children.

The Ygnacio Valley High School Instrumental Music Boosters host their annual Haunted House from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the school, 755 Oak Grove Road, Concord.
Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.
General admission is $5, children younger than 10 are $3.

The annual 5K Competitive Run and the Fun Run/Walk to help save sports in Mt. Diablo district high schools will take place Sunday, Oct. 7 at Newhall Park at Turtle Creek in Concord.
The event helps toward the goal of raising more than $1 million to keep athletics in the districts six area high schools for the 2012-13 school season. It is a family event to which all ages are welcome.
There will be a timed competitive 5K run starting at 9 a.m. as well as fun run/walk at 9:45 a.m. and kiddie race at 10:30 a.m. The races will take place. Medals and prizes awarded for various age groups. The school with the most sign-ups will be presented with a trophy to proudly display for a year. Food and entertainment will be available.
In 2011 the group raised $60,000 and had 1,350 participants.
Registration Fees are $25 for preregistered runners, $30 day-of and $10 for the Kiddie Run. All participants that obtain $50 or more in sponsorships do not have to pay a registration fee.

It's almost time to vote for the next school board members to serve on the Mt. Diablo Unified School District board.
The district's special education Community Advisory Committee will host a Candidates' Question and Answer Panel from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the district office at 1936 Carlotta Drive in Concord. The candidates will be asked questions relevant to special education.
While the questions will be selected in advance, candidates won't know of them until the night of the event. Each candidate will be asked the same question and will have 90 seconds to respond. It is open to the public and will be followed by the committee meeting at 7 p.m.
