We are all getting excited here about the 2012 CityRead. Library staff is encouraging everyone in the community to pick up a copy of "Locked Rooms: A Mary Russell Novel" by Laurie R. King at the library. We are into our third week, and have handed out 450 copies of the book already!
Our culminating program this year is a talk by the author at 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at the new Community Center at 35 Oak St. Barnes and Noble will be on hand to sell King's books, and she will sign them.
In addition to our annual author talk, we have added one additional program this year. Geology professor Mitchell Craig from CSU East Bay will lead a talk about the 1906 earthquake on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., also at the Community Center. The 1906 earthquake plays a major role in "Locked Rooms," and we hope to provide some background about it at this program.
This year's CityRead has a great deal of community support. The Rotary Club of Brentwood, the Lions Club of Brentwood, the Brentwood Art Society and the Friends of the Brentwood Library have all contributed to the book purchase this year. In addition, Poets & Writers Inc., through a grant from the James Irvine Foundation, is providing a matching grant to cover half of the author's fee.
We have also had volunteer help from local students who have labeled all of the books, added bookmarks to the books, and set the books up in baskets for distribution in the library.
Last but not least, the city of Brentwood
On Sept. 25, the Brentwood City Council voted to proceed with the expansion of the library. Hurray! The library is housed at 104 Oak St., across from the new City Hall. Now that the city offices next to us are empty the library and the city will work together to move into about half of the adjoining space, to create a combined space of about 11,000 square feet.
