SAN RAMON -- Runners and walkers will take over the streets on Sunday for the 29th Annual Primo's Run for Education.

The run is the biggest fundraiser for the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports and promotes education in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

Nearly 9,000 runners and walkers participated last year for the event's half marathon and 5k run, which raised $300,000, according to Cristene Burr, the foundation's executive director. Registrations this year could top 10,000, she said.

The half marathon starts in Danville at 7:15 a.m. in front of Primo's Pizza and Pasta, 298 Hartz Ave., and ends at Iron Horse Middle School in San Ramon. The winner receives $500; second place gets $250; and third gets $150.

The 5k starts at 8:15 a.m. at Iron Horse Middle School. First place receives $150 and a $50 Forward Motion Sports gift card; second place gets a $100 Forward Motion Sports gift card; and third place gets a $75 Forward Motion Sports gift card.

Participants can register online at www.primosrun.com. The fee is $65 for the half marathon, $35 for the 5k with timing chip, and $30 for the 5k fun run/walk. Participants can also register on race day for $75 for the half marathon, $45 for the 5k with timing chip, and $40 for the 5k fun run/walk.

There is a pre-race pasta feed on Saturday at Primo's Pizza, with performances by musical groups from schools in the district, raffle prizes and all you can eat pasta. Proceeds from the events are used to fund grants for San Ramon Valley teachers and for technology purchases for district schools.

Burr said the event is perfect for everyone, from seasoned runners to parents with small children.

"We do get dedicated runners, but it's also a community event so people who aren't going to run the race should show up," Burr said. "It's a great way to show support for schools that are underfunded in California, and it's the perfect thing to do on a Sunday morning. The weather's going to be fantastic."
