Knights take title

  • The Las Lomas High girls cross country team placed for runners in the top 10 of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship race to claim its first league title since 1975. Chloe Hansel led the Knights' charge with a fifth-place individual finish at Hidden Valley Park on Nov. 3. The Knights broke Campolindo's six-year hold on the DFAL title by edging the second-place Cougars 39-43.

    Concord teams earn top seeds

  • De La Salle High and Clayton Valley Charter both earned No. 1 seeds when the North Coast Section football brackets were announced Nov. 4. The Spartans, who beat California 27-14 on Nov. 2 to go 10-0 during the regular season, earned the No. 1 seed in the Division I playoffs. Clayton Valley (9-1) was the top seed in Division II. Both squads earned first-round byes.

    Falcons fly at DVAL finals

  • The College Park High boys and girls cross country teams completed a successful Diablo Valley Athletic League meet on Nov. 2 at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez. Led by Victoria Miguel's second-place individual finish, the College Park girls took first as a team. The Falcons' boys team finished a point behind Northgate to secure second with Nathaniel Comer and Patrick Marson taking third and fourth respectively.

  • NCS championships, water polo, Nov. 10, times TBA -- Acalanes High will host all four championship games. Matchups hadn't been determined at press time, but there will be at least two Lamorinda teams playing for titles.

  • Washington at Las Lomas, NCS football, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. -- The Knights also faced the Huskies in the first round of last year's NCS Division II playoffs.

  • Mt. Eden at Concord, NCS football, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. -- Concord's quest to make a third straight appearance in the NCS Division II title game begins with a first-round game against the Monarchs.

    Stars of the week

  • Rachel Nieto, Las Lomas girls volleyball -- The senior outside hitter tallied 16 kills, 17 digs and eight service points to help the Knights beat Dougherty Valley 25-17, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15 on Nov. 2. The victory clinched a share of the DFAL championship for the Knights.

  • Danny Stalters, Northgate boys cross country -- Stalters won his second straight Diablo Valley Athletic League title at Hidden Valley Park on Nov. 2, finishing the 3-mile course in 15:43. Stalters' finish helped the Broncos edge College Park 53-54 for the team title.

  • Tyler Hanson, Miramonte boys cross country -- The senior broke the 3-mile Hidden Valley Park course record when he won the Diablo Foothill Athletic League title in 15:18.3 on Nov. 3.

  • Alex Manuli, Alhambra girls water polo -- The senior scored nine goals, including the game-winner with 23 seconds left, to lift the Bulldogs to a 13-12 comeback win over Las Lomas in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Nov. 3. She also had four goals and five steals in an 11-1 first round win over Alameda Nov. 1.

  • Taylor Poyadue, Alhambra football -- In his final high school game, Poyadue rushed for 290 yards and two touchdowns. Despite his big numbers, the Bulldogs lost 48-27 and did not qualify for the NCS playoffs.

  • Elizabeth Schultz, Acalanes girls golf -- Schultz fired a 1-over 73 at the NCS Tournament of Champions at the Windsor Golf Course on Oct. 29 to earn a spot in the NorCal championships.
