Saluting our heroes

Alexia Heine, 12, of Pleasant Hill, sings the national anthem at the Veterans Day event held Sunday at the Soldiers Monument in Pleasant Hill. Also participating in the event were the Mt. Diablo High School Jr. ROTC Color Guard and Drill Team; Pleasant Hill Boy Scout Troop 401 presenting the flags; Cub Scout Pack 232 distributing U.S. flags to the youth, and badges to each veteran.

in thanks for their service. A costumed Uncle Sam delivered a Veterans Day poem. The program was sponsored by the Pleasant Hill Rotary, Pleasant Hill Lions, American Legion and VFW, and was officiated by emcee, Richard Henne. Rotary president Jason Olson and Lions Club president Don Flaskerud offered comments on the contribution of veterans to the nation. Representatives from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinez, Concord Vet Center, county Veterans Service Office and the Employment Development Department were on hand to provide information on services available to veterans.
