Keeping the environment clean
The Central Contra Costa Sanitary District's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility in Martinez is marking its 15th anniversary. During its operation, the facility has collected -- and kept out of the environment -- more than 26 million pounds of household hazardous waste, including paint, pesticides, used motor oil and batteries. Approximately 90 percent of collected items are recycled or reused, with the remainder disposed of safely. Residents of Central County can drop off items free of charge at 4797 Imhoff Place in Martinez. The facility, the first permanent location in the county to provide a safe place for such disposal, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 800-646-1431 for more information.
