Big win for Carondelet

  • Before heading to Arizona for the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions, the Carondelet High girls basketball team earned an impressive 70-64 win over St. Mary's-Berkeley at the Presentation Shootout on Dec. 15. Mackenzie Cast drained two clutch three-pointers in the final minutes, while Natalie Romeo led the Cougars with 20 points. Lauren Nicolosi added 18 points.

    Knights win Battle of the Creek

  • The Las Lomas High boys basketball team needed overtime, but it secured a Battle of the Creek win over Northgate on Dec. 11. Ben Wood scored 18 points, and Matt Nerland had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) to key the 49-43 Knights victory. Ethan Walchirk paced Northgate with 14 points.

    Falcons complete 3-1 week

  • The College Park High girls soccer team won five straight games before being shut out by Archbishop Mitty-San Jose 3-0 on Dec. 15. In a busy week, the Falcons beat Liberty, Freedom and Mt. Diablo before the setback to the Monarchs. College Park, the defending Diablo Valley Athletic League champion, begins league play this week.

    Hot start for Cougars

  • The Campolindo High girls soccer team is unbeaten in its first six games. Emily Orwig scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Las Lomas on Dec. 14 that improved the Cougars' Diablo Foothill Athletic League record to 2-0-1. A.J. Morgan had two assists.

  • Nike Tournament of Champions, girls basketball, Dec. 20-22 -- Carondelet and Miramonte will attend the Arizona event, which is considered one of the top girls basketball tournaments in the country.

  • Alhambra at Acalanes, boys soccer, Dec. 21, 6:15 p.m. -- The Dons will be tested by a strong Alhambra squad in this DFAL game.

  • Holiday Classic all-star game, football, Dec. 22, 1 p.m. -- The top seniors from Contra Costa County will play the best fom Alameda County at Pittsburg High.

  • Campolindo at El Cerrito, boys basketball, Dec. 22, 4 p.m. -- The Cougars and Gauchos will go head to head at the Premier Showcase at El Cerrito.

    Stars of the week

  • Natalie Romeo, Carondelet girls basketball -- In a matchup of top East Bay teams, the junior point guard scored 20 points to lead the Cougars over St. Mary's-Berkeley 70-64 at the Presentation Shootout on Dec. 15.

  • Tiapepe Vitale, De La Salle football -- The senior running back rushed for 143 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Spartans to their fourth straight CIF Open Division state title on Dec. 15. De La Salle beat Centennial-Corona 48-28.

  • Ben Croze, Acalanes boys soccer -- Croze's two goals and two assists keyed a 5-1 victory over Miramonte on Dec. 12.

  • Laura Hickey, Campolindo girls basketball -- A 29-point, 15-rebound effort by Hickey led the Cougars over Encinal 54-41 in the fifth place game of the Walnut Creek Holiday Classic on Dec. 14.

  • Zoe McGlynn, Las Lomas girls basketball -- McGlynn was the top scorer in wins over San Lorenzo and Mt. Diablo recently. She had 22 points in a 70-36 win over Mt. Diablo on Dec. 12.

  • Matt Nerland, Las Lomas boys basketball -- The junior captain led the Knights to three wins during the week of Dec. 10, scoring 18 points against Hayward on Dec. 12 and another 18 against Vintage on Dec. 15. He had a double-double in the Knights' win over Northgate Dec. 11.

  • Ben Reiter, College Park boys soccer -- Reiter scored three goals to lift the Eagles to a 4-1 victory over Mt. Diablo on Dec. 13. He is the Falcons' leading scorer through 10 games.
