CONCORD -- It's not the easiest thing in the world to earn points in an East Bay Athletic League game, and an ever harder thing to do at De La Salle. But the Monte Vista High boys soccer team was able to do just that.
A game that was fast-paced and entertaining ended in a 0-0 draw on Thursday night, a result that left the top of the EBAL standings clumped together as the Mustangs stay two points behind the Spartans and California.
"To come out of the first half 0-0 was really important to us," Monte Vista coach Matt Zahner said. "I feel pretty good, but the ball was in the air too much tonight and we're better when it's on the pitch."
As fast-paced as the game was, the scoring chances were very few and infrequent. The Spartans (4-0-2, 2-0-1 EBAL) had a header from Nic Bob early in the first half sail just wide, and had a good chance late in the second half when Nick Dildine's left-footed volley went over the crossbar.
"This was a good lesson and experience to go through a game like this," De La Salle coach Derricke Brown said. "It could have gone wrong, but a tie is a good result because we didn't play very well at all. It shows how much work we have to do."
The Mustangs (6-1-4, 1-0-2) had probably their best chance at the 60-minute mark when Jeff Greenberg's shot from inside the box misfired.
