The Martinez Unified School District and the Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District seek applicants to fill a board vacancy.
In November, longtime Martinez school board member Vicki Gordon won a seat on the Contra Costa Community College District governing board. The school board will appoint someone next month to finish the two years left on Gordon's term, which expires in November 2014. Registered voters age 18 or older who live within the school district's boundaries are eligible to submit an application package, which includes a resume, letter of interest and responses to a set of questions.
The application materials are available on the district's website or at the district office, 921 Susana St. Application packets must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 8.
At an optional information session at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at the district office, Superintendent Rami Muth will review the district's budget, mission and goals. School board members will interview the candidates individually at the Jan. 14 board meeting and select Gordon's replacement. Two current board members, John Fuller and Denise Elsken, were appointed.
"The goal is to find people who are going to work together in a collaborative fashion, in the best interest of the district," Muth said.
Cecile Shepard, who had served on the Pleasant Hill recreation district board since her appointment in 1996, resigned abruptly at the end of November. The board will appoint
The board members are overseeing construction of a new community center and upgrades at Pleasant Oaks Park. The district's new teen center opened in October and the grand opening of the new senior center is Jan. 5.
The recreation district has a long history of midterm resignations and subsequent appointments. In fact, it had been a decade since the district had held an election when Shepard won a fourth term in 2010. The district didn't hold an election this year because no one challenged incumbents Dennis Donaghu and Sherry Sterrett.
"I personally like people who are independent thinkers because I like to hear other points of view," Sterrett said. "I would like a person who would be a team player and follows the procedures of the district."
