CONTRA COSTA COUNTY -- No, it wasn't a scam. More than 8,000 voters received letters from the Contra Costa County Elections Division asking them to update their birthdate, and apparently some of those voters worried that the letters were fake and an attempt to gain access to their personal information.

The registrar's office issued a statement Tuesday to assure voters that the letters with the subject line "Missing Birthdate" are legitimate, and the department "maintains the security of (voters') personal data."

The letters were sent in an effort to update the department's voter registration files. For those who have not returned the information, expect a second request letter to hit your mailbox soon. For questions, contact the Elections Division at 925-335-7871, or visit www.cocovote.us.
