PLEASANT HILL -- Karen Sakata, deputy superintendent for the Contra Costa County Office of Education, has announced that she plans to run for Superintendent of Schools next year.

Joseph Ovick, the current Superintendent of Contra Costa County schools, said he does not plan to seek re-election when his term expires in 2014. Ovick has endorsed Sakata's candidacy.

Sakata worked as a teacher and administrator in the Mt. Diablo school district before her appointment as associate superintendent for student programs and services at the county office in 2008. She held that position until 2012, when she was promoted to deputy superintendent. She is second in command under Ovick.
