Deer Valley wins second NCS crown Jordan Ewert had 21 kills and Thio Grigley rang up three key scoring blocks in the third game as the Deer Valley High boys volleyball team rolled to a second straight North Coast Section Division I championship with a 25-16, 25-21, 26-24 win over Foothill on May 23. The Wolverines (39-2) led 18-17 in the third game and the two sides traded points until a defensive kill by Ewert knotted the game 24-24 and sent him to the service line. Jacob Stark made it 25-24 with a kill, then Jacob Brannon gave the Wolverines the title when his shot over the net was unreturnable. The Wolverines received the No. 2 seed for the CIF Northern Regional playoffs and hosted Lowell-San Francisco on May 27, after this newspaper went to press.

Season ends for Liberty baseball team The Liberty baseball team's impressive season ended May 24 with a 14-1 loss to No. 2 De La Salle in the quarterfinals of the NCS Division I playoffs. The Lions captured the outright Bay Valley Athletic League championship and beat Heritage in the first round of the postseason. Against De La Salle Mitchell Zamora, the BVAL MVP, was 2 for 2 and drove in the only run for the seventh-seeded Lions, who finished the season with a 14-12 record.
BVAL track stars get ready for MOC Several BVAL track and field stars tuned up for the NCS Meet of Champions from May 30-31 with impressive performances at the Tri-Valley Area meet at Amador Valley on May 24. Deer Valley easily won the girls team title with 95 points. The Wolverines won the girls 400-meter relay, and got victories from Briana Guillory in the 100 (12.13) and Artearra Coffey in the 400 (44.73). Deer Valley also won the boys 400 relay (42.03), and Nsimba Webster won the boys long jump (22 feet, 9.25 inches) and triple jump (48-4.5). Heritage star Frank Kurtz was just off the meet record in the 400, winning in 47.72.
On Deck NCS Meet of Champions, track and field, May 30-31 -- The best track and field athletes from across the section will gather at Cal's Edwards Stadium for the NCS championships. The top three athletes in each event will automatically advance to compete in the CIF Championships next week in Clovis.

Zamora also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a stolen base in Liberty's 4-1 win over Heritage in the first round.
