OAKLAND -- A man found dead in the Oakland Estuary Tuesday morning with weights wrapped around him was identified Wednesday as Christopher J. Lattie, 27, of Susanville, who authorities said had a history of mental problems.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine how exactly Lattie died but authorities believe he committed suicide.
A fisherman spotted the body about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in the water a few feet off a pier at the Jack London Aquatic Center, 115 Embarcadero.
Authorities believe he had been in the water since either late Monday or early Tuesday.
His 1994 Oldsmobile was found parked in a lot at the center. He apparently had been living out of the car for several weeks.
Authorities said they found literature in the car indicating Lattie had been reading about preparing for death.
Authorities said that after talking with relatives and others they learned Lattie had a history of mental problems and had not been seen by relatives for several weeks.
