Spartans fall in semis

The De La Salle High boys water polo team had its season come to an end in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals. The Spartans fell to San Ramon Valley 14-11 on Nov. 7. Colin Chiapello and Tucker Angelo scored three goals each in the loss for De La Salle, which finished the year with a 21-6 overall record.

Kaehler, DVC win

Diablo Valley College quarterback Quinn Kaehler helped the Vikings to a 27-17 win over Feather River on Nov. 10 in their regular-season finale. Kaehler, a California High graduate, finished the regular season leading the nation with 3,704 passing yards. He also set DVC single-season records for passing yards and touchdown passes (36).

Knights, Broncos move on

The Las Lomas and Northgate girls volleyball teams both won their North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals matches on Nov. 10 to advance to the semifinals. The Knights rallied from a first game loss to beat Casa Grande-Petaluma 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-6. Northgate cruised to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-23 win over Dublin in its quarterfinal. Semifinal results were not available at press time.

Mats capture NCS title

Junior Tyler Kirchberg scored the game-winning goal with 1.53 seconds remaining to lift the Miramonte High boys water polo team past San Ramon Valley 9-8 in the North Coast Section Division I title game. Jack Fellner scored four goals to lead Miramonte, which won its 13th section title in the last 18 years. Charlie Wiser and Amin Anjedani added two goals each.

On deck

Pittsburg at De La Salle, NCS football, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. -- After a first-round bye, the Spartans will kick off the postseason against the No. 9 Pirates. De La Salle ended Pittsburg's season last year in the semifinals, 48-0.

Analy at Campolindo, NCS football, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. -- The Cougars' road back to the NCS Division III title game includes a quarterfinal matchup against an unbeaten Analy team.

NCS championships, cross country, Nov. 17, 8:30 a.m. -- The section's top runners will get together for a day of racing at the 3-mile Hayward High course. Top finishers will move on to the state championships.

Laney at Diablo Valley, football, Nov. 17, 1 p.m. -- The Vikings (6-4) host Laney (5-5) in the East Bay Bowl.

Stars of the week

Mitch Daniels, Concord football -- The quarterback completed 14 of 26 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns in Concord's 50-6 victory over Mt. Eden in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs Nov. 9. Daniels also threw four 2-point conversions.

Emily Bedolla, College Park girls volleyball -- The Falcons' season ended with a five-game loss to to Dublin in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs on Nov. 7, but Bedolla played well in defeat. She had 15 kills, three aces and four digs.

Kyle Egan, Diablo Valley football -- Egan led a strong defensive effort as the Vikings beat Feather River 27-17 on Nov. 10. Egan had a team-high seven tackles, including two sacks.

Jack Fellner, Miramonte boys water polo -- Fellner, a UCLA-bound senior, scored eight total goals in the Matadors' semifinal and championship victories during the NCS Division I playoffs.

Kyle Hill, Las Lomas football -- The senior rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Knights' 31-14 victory over Washington in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs on Nov. 9.

Annika Jensen, Campolindo girls water polo -- Jensen scored five goals in the semifinals and two in the title game to lead the Cougars to the NCS Division II championship.

Michelle Mayfield, Berean Christian girls volleyball -- Mayfield helped the Eagles to a first-round NCS Division IV playoff victory over Clear Lake by contributing 11 kills, 8 digs, two blocks and two aces in a three-game win Nov. 7.

Zati Williams, Miramonte football -- The senior had 138 receiving yards and caught four first-half touchdown passes as the Matadors topped Tennyson 35-7 in the first round of the NCS Division III playoffs on Nov. 10. He also played well at cornerback.
