ValleyCare Health System and UC San Francisco will collaborate on cancer care in the Tri-Valley area, a move that should make it easier for local patients to see cancer sub-specialists and participate in trials of promising new treatments, the two organizations announced Tuesday.

ValleyCare's Regional Cancer Center in Pleasanton will join forces with UCSF's Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"For our patients, this means access to university-level care and clinical trials, all delivered with a personal touch in a comfortable environment close to home," said Dr. Rishi Sawhney, medical director of ValleyCare's cancer center.

UCSF is affiliated with six other cancer centers in Chico, Redding, St. Helena, Reno, Stockton and the Monterey Peninsula.

"This new affiliation reflects our mission to make high-level cancer care more broadly available throughout Northern California," said Dr. Peter Carroll, director of clinical services and strategic planning for UCSF's cancer center.
