Much as it did in the North Coast Section playoffs last season, the Monte Vista High girls soccer team seized the moment in a 2-0 East Bay Athletic League win over visiting Livermore on Tuesday.
The Mustangs (6-4-4, 4-2-2 EBAL) needed a win to improve their chances of earning a return trip to NCS and defending their Division I title. Teams must have .500 records either in league or overall to qualify for the postseason.
The Mustangs got a strong effort from attacker Ashlynn Goerz, who is headed to Stanford on a lacrosse scholarship. Goerz made it 1-0 in the first half on a header off Chelsea Barry's corner kick, right after Livermore goalkeeper Savannah Winters made a brilliant save on a penalty kick by Arianna Zamora.
"She was a beast all day," Monte Vista coach Brett LeQuesne said of Goerz. "She did a lot of running and was really hard to handle. All that size is just solid ."
Madeline Gibson scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
Livermore (6-6-3, 2-4-3) upended Monte Vista 1-0 on Dec. 18. The Mustangs created numerous chances in the first half, only to be denied by Winters, who had seven saves.
"It was definitely her best effort of the season. Unfortunately it came in a loss," Livermore coach Jason Maratsos said. "They definitely outplayed us."
Don Sanders has been hired as Heritage's coach, athletic director Pat Cruickshank said. Sanders replaces Jeff Haagenson,
This will be the first varsity head coaching job for Sanders, an anatomy and chemistry teacher at the school who coached on Haagenson's staff for several years. He was the varsity offensive line coach last year and the head freshmen coach for two seasons before that. Sanders also assisted at Liberty and Mt. Eden before his time at Heritage.
