OAKLAND -- A man already being prosecuted as a suspected accomplice in the fatal shootings of two teenage girls Nov. 25 is one of two men charged in a vicious West Oakland attack two weeks later where a woman was sexually assaulted and her boyfriend knocked unconscious, police said Tuesday.
Police said Antonio Edwards, 20, was linked to the Dec. 8 attack on the couple in the 2800 block of Ettie Street by DNA.
The other man charged, Emmanuel Chioma, 20, of Oakland, has been identified by the woman as one of the attackers, police said.
They are each charged with robbery, rape, assault with a firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and two other sex counts. Edwards is being held in lieu of $1.25 million bail and Chioma $1.27 million.
Edwards would not talk to investigators and Chioma denied involvement in the assault, police said.
Both men are also being investigated as suspects in other robberies, police said.
The woman and her boyfriend, both 35, whose names were not released, had just left a business about 11:46 p.m. Dec. 8 when they were confronted by two gunmen. The man was hit by one of the gunmen and fell to the ground unconscious.
The gunmen then robbed the couple and sexually assaulted the woman before fleeing, police said.
Both Edwards and Chioma were arrested Dec. 13 on gun charges in an unrelated case, and Chioma eventually made bail.
On Dec. 15, Edwards was charged with being an
Police said Edwards was linked through DNA to the sexual assault in January. Special Victims Unit investigator Officer Joe Rasler noted that Edwards and Chioma were arrested together on the gun charges. Rasler included Chioma's picture in a photo lineup showed to the sexual assault victim who picked him as one of the attackers. Chioma was arrested when he showed up in court Jan. 30 on the gun case and both were charged with the sexual assault Friday.
