DUBLIN -- The City Council will fill a council vacancy by appointment rather than hold a special election to replace Eric Swalwell, who resigned after his election to Congress.

Hopefuls have just a week to apply. Candidates must submit applications by 3 p.m. Feb. 13 to the city clerk's office.

The council will interview all candidates in public at a 5:30 p.m. meeting Feb. 19 at the civic center, 100 Civic Plaza. For applications call the clerk's office at 925-833-6650 or visit www.dublin.ca.gov.

The council agreed Tuesday night to fill the vacancy by an appointment. Doreen Wehrenberg, a former city planning commissioner, and Shawn Costello, an advocate for the disabled, both said Tuesday they intend to apply.

Swalwell resigned from the council Jan. 2, a day before taking over the House seat he was elected to in November in the 15th Congressional district. The council must make the appointment by March 2.
