CONCORD -- Clayton Valley High wrestler Matt McCoy believes in giving each opponent due respect. McCoy may be the third-ranked 140-pounder in the North Coast Section, but he wasn't about to overlook anyone in the Diablo Valley Athletic League tournament Wednesday.

McCoy overwhelmed Northgate's Alec Sluser in the final, pinning him with 11 seconds left in the first round, to ensure him a trip to the NCS tournament and a chance at the CIF State championships. But he wasn't going to overlook anything in the league meet.

"I just go out there like I'm wrestling a state champion," he said. "Every time I go out there, I wrestle the same way, like it's a big match every time."

College Park ran away with the team title, claiming seven individual championships. Clayton Valley took second, with three individual champions.

Nearly half the crowd left in the gym was gathered around the mat when College Park's Cory Campbell pinned Northgate's Max Moore for the 287-pound title in the final match of the tournament. Other Falcons who were atop the medal stand included Kaelan Kelly (108 pounds), Danny Croff (122), Anthony Urbina (147), Marc Wilhelm (154), Matthew Zachary (162) and Grant Hamant (197).

McCoy, Mustafa Sheridil (115) and Lorenzo Yacarina (128) won league titles for the Eagles.

"It was good to see some of the younger guys wrestle well and have some fun out there," McCoy said.
