ORINDA -- The Las Lomas High wrestling team put seven wrestlers into championship matches and captured six individual titles to help win the Diablo Foothill Athletic League tournament Saturday at Miramonte.
The Knights qualified 10 wrestlers for the North Coast Section Championships Feb. 22-23 at Newark Memorial and finished with 284 points as a team. Dougherty Valley was second with 233 points.
The Knights, who also won an undefeated DFAL dual title as well as the NCS Division II East Bay team dual championship, led by a comfortable 142-128 margin before the medal rounds began, only lost one of their final 10 matches.
Amir Khakimov (126 pounds), Levi Russell (145), Trey Brazil (160), Jason Sullivan (182), Lance Larson (220) and Dylan Walsh (285) all were crowned league champs. Willie Amen placed second at 195 after Dougherty's Emanuel Anaim pinned him at 3:24.
In the grittiest matches of the tournament thanks to the stakes, Jeff Caldwell (120), Akmal Khakimov (138) and Saleb Wali (170) all won their third-place matches to advance to NCS. The top three placers at the DFAL tournament qualified for the section championships.
"It's been a good day," Las Lomas coach John Welch said. "There is a lot of good leadership on the team. A lot of senior leadership. Russell, Walsh and Brazil are our three captains.
"We won the dual team title. That, league, and this -- it's a nice way to end the team season, and for the seniors, the team career. It's been a fun year. Hopefully we'll get two more weeks of it."
The Wildcats send eight to NCS, led by league champs Max Levchenko (113) and Emanuel Anaim (195). Alhambra, which placed third, was led by champion Avi Buyuker (108). The Bulldogs send seven to NCS.
