DANVILLE -- The popular Devil Mountain Run is back after being canceled last year.

The Town Council voted Tuesday to approve street closures and provide support for the run.

Marty Breen, owner of Forward Motion Sports, was a driving force behind the return of the race, which will now be managed by Danville-based Katalyst Events.

"It's exciting, particularly because it has local leadership now," Mayor Newell Arnerich said.

The race was founded in 1978 as a fundraiser for Children's Hospital Oakland and typically attracted up to 20,000 runners to the downtown the first Sunday in May.

The hospital canceled the race last year citing escalating production costs and declining numbers of runners.
