WALNUT CREEK -- A community workshop focusing on proposed smoking restrictions in multifamily housing will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the third-floor conference room at Walnut Creek City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.

The city is exploring new rules to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke by restricting smoking in multifamily housing, downtown areas frequented by pedestrians, commercial areas, and a variety of public gathering places.

The multifamily component of that would prohibit smoking in all indoor and outdoor common areas, balconies and patios within 20 feet of apartments, condominiums and similar housing. The ordinance would also prohibit smoking inside of new multifamily residential units, owned or rented.
